Salma Mahmud was the elder daughter of Dr M.D. Taseer, the eminent poet and critic. She was born in Baramula, Kashmir. She was educated at Amritsar, Delhi and later at the Kinnaird College, Lahore. She obtained M.A. (Hons) in English Language and Literature from the University of Edinburgh. She taught English Literature and Humanities in Pakistan and UAE.
