What if India’s biggest education challenge isn’t schools —but how teachers are prepared?

Educating the Educator takes readers inside one of the country’s most overlooked reform laboratories – the North Eastern Region – to reveal why decades of regulation have failed to translate into better classrooms. Drawing on field research, policy analysis, and real institutional data, Dr. Vikram Sahay uncovers a teacher education system obsessed with compliance, yet disconnected from how teachers are actually trained, mentored, and prepared for the realities of schools. The book exposes why qualifications no longer guarantee classroom readiness, why good practices remain isolated, and why technology, private investment, and partnerships have struggled to move the needle. At a time when NEP 2020 promises a bold reset, this timely work offers a roadmap for shifting from paperwork to performance, from rules to results, and from fragmented effort to systemic impact. Essential reading for policymakers, education leaders, ed-tech innovators, and anyone committed to building the future of Indian  education – starting with its teachers.
